The settlers who crossed America by covered wagons a few hundred years ago were hardy people who survived and prospered with only the basics. But if they carried any furniture with them, it was usually the cedar chest. The cedar chest was where all the family’s valuables were kept and once the homestead came up, it was the central storage area of the house. A cedar chest is also known as a “hope chest” because it was where young women used to store clothing and furnishing items in anticipation of their marriages and setting up their own homes. With a vide variety of styles, they can fit into almost any modern décor.
