The étagère has its origins in late 18th century France and is an intricately carved series of shelves meant for the display of small items and bric-a-brac. It is also known as a “what-not.” Usually made in a square or rectangular shape the étagère is perfect for placement in corners and can be used to place a table lamp on the top shelf. The traditional étagère design is very delicate looking and although modern manufacturing techniques mean that pieces made today are quite strong, the slim look of the furniture means that placing bulky items on it will make the overall effect look top heavy.
